Noise Impact Assessments

The Process of Noise Impact Assessments

The process of undertaking Noise Impact Assessments (NIA) for planning application generally include:

  1. Consolation with Local Planning Authority (LPA) detailing our methodology to each NIA.
  2. Baseline noise survey, either attended or unattended, to measure the existing noise environment at and around the proposed development.
  3. Calculation of noise levels on Noise Sensitive Receptors (NSR).
  4. Compare the calculated noise level with Local and National Planning Policy assess compliance.
  5. Where necessary, provide Mitigation Advice to demonstrate that Local and National Planning Policy can be met.

Detailed below are various NIA the team at Hart Sound & Air Testing can provide:

Industrial Noise Assessments - BS 4142:2014+A1:2019

A BS 4142:2014+A1:2019 - "Methods for rating and assessing industrial and commercial sound" noise assessment can be required when your project will introduce new noise sources of an industrial or commercial nature with the potential of noise impact on nearby Noise Sensitive Receptors.

A BS 4142:2014+A1:2019 report clearly determines if noise complaints are a likely and where appropriate, suggest mitigation measures to reduce noise levels within guideline levels.

Examples of when a BS 4142:2014+A1:2019 noise assessment may be required include installation of Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP), new restaurant or takeaway extraction system, Condenser Unit or Air Conditioning (AC) and other industrial/commercial noise sources.

Residential Noise Assessments - BS8233:2014 and the ProPG

A BS 8233:2014 - "Sound insulation and noise reduction for buildings" noise assessment can be required when applying for planning permission to create, extend or alter a residential dwelling that is affected by a surrounding noise source.

Additionally to BS 8233:2014, the Professional Planning Guidance (ProPG) 2017 gives guidance on determining whether the site is suitable for housing developments.

A residential NIA report will typically assess and detail noise levels of proposed external amenity areas (gardens, balcony's) and façade noise levels across the development. Where appropriate, the report will suggest suitable mitigation measures, including glazing recommendations and plot orientation, to reduce noise levels within guideline levels.
